Bad Schwartau Warns of Fehmarnbelt Project Impacts

The city of Bad Schwartau in Ostholstein has voiced concerns regarding the planning stages for the hinterland connection to the Fehmarnbelt fixed link. Mayor Katrin Engeln has warned of significant repercussions for the town during the construction period.

Expectations are for considerable disruptions over the approximately four-year construction phase. These include limitations on rail transport, increased noise levels, heavy goods vehicle traffic, and general traffic impediments. Upon completion, the town's landscape will be notably altered by noise barriers potentially reaching up to eight meters in height.

Beyond direct noise and traffic, the city anticipates broader impacts on forest areas and the local climate. Furthermore, a permanent increase in freight transport volume is expected as a consequence of the new link. Residents are encouraged to review the publicly accessible planning documents and submit any objections by the end of July, as part of the formal consultation process.

To address public concerns, the city will host an information event on July 1st at the Krummlandhalle. This event aims to provide further details on the project's scope and discuss the potential long-term effects on the community and its environment.
