Baidu Netdisk Reports Tax on Unauthorized Activity; Cites Campaign Prizes
Baidu Netdisk is facing scrutiny after users discovered tax filings for income they did not earn. The company attributes this to a promotion distributing prizes and assures user privacy was maintained.

Baidu Netdisk, a prominent cloud storage service in China, has drawn criticism following reports from numerous users who found unexplained tax filings for "general labor remuneration" within their personal income tax applications. The filings, for an amount of 89.10 yuan, were reportedly made by Beijing Duoyou Technology Co., Ltd., the entity operating Baidu Netdisk.
In response to the growing online discussion, Baidu Netdisk issued a statement explaining the situation. The company stated the filings were related to a promotional campaign titled "Share Immediately to Get TravelSky Membership." As part of this campaign, users were awarded a membership to the TravelSky airline app, valued at 89.10 yuan. Baidu Netdisk claims it followed legal requirements by declaring this prize distribution as taxable income.
The company emphasized that the tax declaration was conducted in strict compliance with Chinese tax laws and privacy regulations. It assured users that the data was used solely for tax declaration purposes and would not be disclosed externally. Reports indicate that users who experienced this issue were contacted by Baidu Netdisk, offered a one-month free service as compensation, and asked to withdraw the tax filing.
This incident has sparked debate regarding the taxation of digital rewards and promotional giveaways. While Baidu Netdisk asserts its actions were lawful, the unexpected nature of the filings and the initial lack of clear communication have raised concerns among users about data privacy and corporate transparency.
