Bain & Company: Global AI Market Could Reach $6 Trillion Annually by 2031
The global Artificial Intelligence (AI) market could generate $6 trillion in annual revenue by 2031, driven by significant innovation beyond employee productivity, according to a Bain & Company report.

The global Artificial Intelligence (AI) market is projected to reach $6 trillion in annual revenue by 2031, according to Bain & Company's latest Global Technology Report. This projection hinges on substantial innovation that extends beyond current applications, particularly in boosting employee productivity.
While existing AI uses like consumer services and enterprise software are expected to contribute between $1.2 trillion and $1.8 trillion in annual revenue, the remaining $4.2 trillion will need to be generated through new avenues. These include novel revenue streams from model providers integrating ads, autonomous systems in transportation and industry, physical AI applications in simulation and robotics, and entirely new markets in areas such as drug discovery and energy generation.
The surge in AI compute demand has significantly revitalized the hardware and semiconductor sectors. Market capitalization for these companies grew at a 24% annual rate between 2020 and 2026, contrasting with a 6% growth for software firms. High-bandwidth memory (HBM), advanced packaging, and custom silicon are identified as rapidly expanding segments.
The report also highlights a critical juncture for cybersecurity. AI has drastically compressed the timeline for a typical cyberattack from approximately four weeks to as little as 18 hours. The proliferation of AI agents further amplifies potential impact, necessitating comprehensive advancements in threat detection and governance.
