Ballard to Supply 4.8MW of Fuel Cells for Romania's First Hydrogen Trains
Ballard Power Systems has received a 4.8MW order from Siemens Mobility for 24 fuel cell modules. These will power Romania's first fleet of hydrogen trains, representing the largest deployment to date for the platform.

Ballard Power Systems announced a 4.8-megawatt order from Siemens Mobility for 24 of its FCrail™ 200 kW fuel cell modules. These modules are destined for 12 Mireo Plus H hydrogen trains, which will constitute Romania's first hydrogen-powered rail fleet. This order marks the largest deployment to date for Ballard's fuel cell platform in the rail sector.
The deliveries are scheduled to commence in the second quarter of 2027, with the trains expected to enter service by the end of the same year. Siemens Mobility will handle the manufacturing and assembly of the trains. The hydrogen trains are intended for regional passenger services across various parts of Romania, aiming to decarbonize the country's transportation network.
Ballard's fuel cell technology provides a zero-emission solution for rail transport, offering an alternative to diesel-powered trains and contributing to reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Siemens Mobility has previously selected Ballard's technology for other projects, and this new order reinforces the companies' collaboration in advancing hydrogen mobility solutions.
The order is significant for Ballard, representing its largest single order for FCrail™ products to date. It reflects a growing global trend towards adopting hydrogen technology in public transportation, particularly in the rail industry.
