Baltimore Airport Restaurant Sues Concessions Manager Over Lease Dispute

Silver Diner, a restaurant operating at Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI), has filed a lawsuit against Fraport USA, the airport's concessions manager. The suit centers on a dispute over a promised 10-year lease renewal and allegedly misrepresented renovation requirements.

The lawsuit claims that Fraport USA demanded between $8 million and $10 million in renovations as a condition for renewing the diner's lease. Silver Diner alleges that Fraport USA falsely stated the Maryland Aviation Administration (MAA) mandated these costly upgrades, a claim the MAA has reportedly denied.

Further, the restaurant contends that the scope and cost of renovations significantly increased after an initial agreement in 2022. In an effort to garner support, Silver Diner has launched a public campaign urging customers to write to Maryland's governor and other officials, seeking intervention. Over 1,000 letters have reportedly been sent.

Silver Diner states that compliance with the new renovation demands would necessitate closing the restaurant for at least a year, resulting in the loss of approximately 120 jobs. The company emphasizes its unique position as a regional chain distinct from larger, often branded, airport eateries and argues that its current pricing reflects this.

The case highlights tensions between airport authorities, concession management companies, and established local businesses operating within airport terminals.
