Banking Association Urges Caution with Real-Time Transfers

The Banking Association of Schleswig-Holstein has advised customers to exercise caution when using real-time online banking transfers. These transactions, which are completed within seconds, cannot be stopped once initiated, unlike traditional bank transfers.

As this service becomes standard across the EU from October, the association warns that it presents increased risks for misuse. According to the Banking Association, these risks include phishing scams where criminals attempt to obtain users' banking details.

To mitigate criminal access, a system will be implemented to verify that the account number matches the recipient's name before transfer approval. If the data does not align, a warning should be issued before the transaction is completed. Consumer protection agencies have also expressed concerns that this new verification process could be exploited for phishing attacks, particularly during its initial phase.

The Banking Association recommends that customers remain vigilant and double-check the accuracy of all details before approving a real-time transfer. Traditional transfer methods, which can still be cancelled, remain a safer option in certain circumstances.
