Banking Revenue Pool Nears Record $1.1 Trillion; BCG Urges Reshaping for Growth

The corporate and investment banking (CIB) sector's revenue pool is projected to hit a record $1.1 trillion in 2026, marking a significant increase. Boston Consulting Group (BCG) suggests this presents a crucial opportunity for industry players to shift towards client- and platform-led business models.

The report indicates a transition from traditional product-centric approaches to models prioritizing client needs and technological platforms. This shift is driven by the growing influence of hedge funds and financial sponsors, whose revenue generation outpaces that of traditional corporate clients. BCG forecasts that the total CIB revenue pool, including non-bank financial institutions, will reach approximately $1.4 trillion by 2030.

Technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), is expected to substantially transform banking operations. BCG estimates that up to 40% of middle and back-office capacity could be freed up by AI by 2030. This potential efficiency gain may not directly translate to job losses but could lead to resource reallocation and increased productivity.

Regionally, the Asia-Pacific area is anticipated to experience the fastest growth, at roughly 5% annually. North America is expected to remain the largest market, though its share will grow more slowly. Growth in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) is projected at around 3% per year, with a declining share of the global revenue pool.
