Battery Storage Now Cheaper Than Natural Gas Turbines for Data Centers
Battery energy storage solutions have become more cost-effective than natural gas turbines favored by many data center developers. This shift is expected to significantly impact energy investments in the sector.

Battery energy storage systems have reached a cost-effectiveness threshold that surpasses that of natural gas turbines, particularly for data center energy needs. According to a report by Wood Mackenzie, four-hour battery storage solutions are less expensive than open-cycle gas turbines across all continents and in 43 surveyed markets.
This cost shift coincides with the rapid expansion of the data center industry. The increasing demand for electricity and backup power for data centers has driven up costs for traditional solutions like gas turbines, while battery technology prices have declined.
Analysts predict a widespread adoption of battery-based energy storage systems in data centers seeking more stable and predictable power sources. This development may also facilitate the integration of renewable energy by buffering the variability of renewable sources.
Data centers play a significant role in energy consumption. The proliferation of new, more cost-effective, and environmentally friendly energy solutions like batteries could reduce the industry's carbon footprint and enhance its energy efficiency moving forward.
