BC Winery Reduces Costs and Attracts Customers with Energy-Efficient Upgrades

Festina Lente Estate Winery in Langley, British Columbia, has implemented significant energy-efficiency upgrades, leading to reduced operational costs and an expanded customer base. The winery's owners, Teresa and Bill Townsley, have embraced sustainability as a core business strategy, reflecting their company's Latin name, "Festina Lente," meaning "make haste slowly."

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the owners utilized the downtime to expand their tasting room facilities and construct an outdoor patio, concurrently focusing on the business's environmental impact. Key changes included switching all property lighting to energy-saving LED bulbs and installing low-flow toilets to conserve water. The original 1979 farmhouse windows were also replaced with more energy-efficient models.

Teresa Townsley estimates that the new energy-efficient windows have decreased heating and cooling costs by up to 20%. She anticipates a return on investment for the window upgrades in less than five years. Further savings are expected from the LED lighting and water conservation measures.

Beyond direct cost reductions, the sustainability initiatives have fostered significant customer loyalty and attracted new clientele. Townsley highlighted the positive impact, stating, "That goodwill from customers interested in sustainability has been a huge factor in the success of our business."
