BCG: 70% of Economies Underprepared for AI Disruption
New Boston Consulting Group research indicates over 70% of economies studied are poorly equipped for AI-driven upheaval. Only five nations are categorized as AI pioneers.
Boston Consulting Group (BCG) released research on November 20, 2024, determining that a significant majority of global economies are underprepared for the disruption posed by artificial intelligence (AI). Of the 73 economies analyzed, over 70% score below average in critical areas such as ecosystem participation, skills, and research and development.
The BCG AI Maturity Matrix assesses economies' resilience and readiness to navigate AI's impact. The study categorizes nations based on their vulnerability to AI shifts and their capacity to adopt the technology. Only five economies—Canada, Mainland China, Singapore, the UK, and the US—were identified as "AI pioneers." These leaders demonstrate advanced infrastructure, investment, and talent development.
The report highlights that economies with a high concentration of AI-exposed sectors, such as Luxembourg, Hong Kong, and Singapore (dominated by financial and business services), are most vulnerable. Conversely, countries with larger shares of less susceptible sectors like construction and agriculture, including Indonesia and India, face lower disruption risks. In terms of investment and R&D, the US and Singapore stand out for their strong talent pools, while Mainland China leads in research publications.
"This first-of-its-kind study offers a broad view of global adoption, revealing that while most economies are gradually embracing AI, a small influential group of pioneers is emerging as global leaders," said Christian Schwaerzler, a BCG managing director and coauthor of the report. "This handful of leading markets stand to gain significant economic advantages and are uniquely positioned to shape how humanity will engage with this transformative technology."
BCG offers tailored recommendations for policymakers and provides an interactive dashboard for deeper analysis. The report suggests that while most economies are gradually adapting to AI, the pioneering nations are significantly ahead in this transition, positioning them for substantial competitive advantages in the coming years.
