BCG: Digital Transformation and Storytelling in Media Industry
BCG's article explores digital transformation and the power of storytelling in the media industry, using Fairfax Media as a case study for navigating technological shifts.
Boston Consulting Group (BCG) has published an article examining the challenges of digital transformation and the crucial role of storytelling within the media industry. The article highlights the experiences of Fairfax Media, an Australia- and New Zealand-based media conglomerate, during a period of significant digital change starting in 2012.
Fairfax Media, with its portfolio of newspapers, magazines, radio networks, and digital media, faced considerable disruptive forces. As reported by Andrew Lam-Po-Tang, then CIO and CTO, these pressures stemmed from social media, mobile internet, cloud computing, declining print readership, and evolving media consumption habits. His IT team sought to address these shifts by defining five core capabilities: being audience-obsessed, social, mobile, value-driven, and lean and agile.
Lam-Po-Tang emphasized that technology must align with business objectives and cited the risk of critical errors, such as an accidental deletion of a key business backup that required nine days to rectify. This incident underscored the necessity for robust error management and a cultural shift towards greater accuracy.
The article introduces the "check and check again" principle, inspired by observations from a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). In this model, an independent individual verifies every step of medication administration to ensure patient safety. Lam-Po-Tang adapted this practice to technology delivery processes, leading to an immediate improvement in results.
Furthermore, the BCG article details the importance of "story time." Hospital staff would review a patient's narrative, including background, current status, and upcoming procedures. This ensured that each team member understood the patient's situation and care plan, fostering efficient and consistent treatment. In digital transformation, a similar approach helps teams grasp and communicate the overall picture of projects and objectives.
