BCG Report Projects Transformation of Sales Teams Through Agentic AI
Boston Consulting Group suggests that autonomous AI agents could remove traditional sales resource constraints, shifting human roles toward orchestration by 2035.

Boston Consulting Group (BCG) has published a new analysis suggesting that agentic AI systems, capable of reasoning and acting autonomously, will fundamentally restructure sales operations over the next decade. Unlike existing AI tools that provide basic support, these agents are expected to handle tasks such as qualifying leads, tailoring recommendations, and negotiating deals independently.
The central opportunity identified by BCG lies in expanding high-touch sales coverage. Currently, intensive sales resources are often reserved for top-tier accounts due to cost limitations. By delegating routine tasks to autonomous agents, firms could provide personalized service to mid-market and long-tail segments without incurring significant increases in headcount.
The shift will necessitate a change in the role of sales professionals, who will likely transition into orchestrators of digital teams. A single account manager will be responsible for overseeing various agents dedicated to pricing, support, and scheduling. However, BCG warns that this transition requires robust oversight to mitigate risks such as data failures, hallucinations, and threats to customer trust.
BCG advises firms to begin piloting agent-led workflows in neglected segments immediately. By experimenting with these systems now, companies can refine their operating models and train staff to manage digital colleagues before the technology reaches full-scale deployment.
