BDC Advises Businesses on Cash Flow Planning

The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) is urging businesses to prioritize financial planning, particularly concerning cash flow projections for the upcoming year. The bank highlights that many entrepreneurs overlook this crucial step, potentially leading to significant financial challenges and hindering growth.

BDC emphasizes that robust financial forecasting is essential for maintaining business health and ensuring a sustainable growth trajectory. The institution recommends creating annual cash flow projections to allow for regular monitoring and necessary adjustments throughout the year.

The guidance outlines four key steps for effective cash flow planning. The first step involves developing an annual budget aligned with the company's strategic objectives. This includes estimating revenues from all sources and projecting expenses, considering factors like customer payment terms and planned capital expenditures.

The second step focuses on identifying and arranging financing needs well in advance. BDC suggests that proactive financing arrangements at the start of the year improve approval chances and can lead to better terms. The bank also cautions against using working capital for long-term investments, which can create cash shortages.
