BDC Advises Businesses on Employee Engagement for Cost Reduction

The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) has published a guide outlining strategies for businesses to engage their employees in cost reduction initiatives. Senior Business Advisor Patrick Choquette emphasizes that involving staff in decision-making is crucial for successful savings.

Choquette suggests treating employees as business partners, making them aware of the costs associated with waste and inefficiency. This approach encourages employees to take ownership of cost-saving measures, shifting the focus from job cuts to operational efficiency.

BDC recommends five key steps: ensuring complete transparency about the company's financial situation and cost-saving goals; measuring performance in key areas and sharing this data with employees; holding regular meetings to track progress; soliciting and implementing employee suggestions; and providing training opportunities.

Sharing performance data can highlight inefficiencies and foster creativity. Regular meetings help embed efficiency into the company culture, while valuing and acting on employee ideas, even small ones, promotes engagement and continuous improvement.

Furthermore, BDC notes that investing in employee training can significantly boost productivity and motivation. Training can encompass formal courses as well as informal methods like job shadowing and mentoring, ultimately supporting long-term cost reduction goals.
