The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) has issued guidance for entrepreneurs on how to build a culture of continuous improvement within their businesses. This strategy aims to increase company profitability, efficiency, and innovation in response to evolving market conditions.
Lalit Bhushan, a Senior Business Advisor with BDC Advisory Services, stresses the importance of adopting continuous improvement for maintaining business competitiveness. "If you don't change, you'll become a dinosaur that disappears because it can’t adapt to the evolving environment," Bhushan stated.
Continuous improvement is defined as an organized approach to constantly enhance a company’s operations and products through incremental steps. It often draws upon the Japanese Kaizen methodology, focusing on refining processes towards greater efficiency and perfection. Key objectives include reducing waste (of time and resources), minimizing variation to ensure quality, increasing process flexibility, and leveraging digitization to support these enhancements.
Implementing these methodologies can yield significant benefits, such as increased profitability, reduced costs, improved customer satisfaction, and a fostered culture of innovation. BDC offers various tools and advisory services, including Lean and Six Sigma methodologies, to assist businesses in identifying and eliminating inefficiencies and boosting productivity.
