BDC Commits $6 Billion to Finance Canadian Defence Sector
The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) has announced a new platform to support the defence industry, offering up to $6 billion in financing, investments, and advisory services. The initiative aims to strengthen Canada's defence sector.

The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) has launched a new initiative to bolster the nation's defence industry. Through its newly established Defence Platform, BDC plans to provide up to $6 billion in financing, investments, and advisory services. This move aligns with Canada's Defence Industrial Strategy and aims to enhance the sector's competitiveness, innovation, and resilience.
The bank's support is tailored to address the long and complex procurement cycles characteristic of the defence sector. Companies often face substantial upfront costs for certifications, scaling production, facility upgrades, and technological development before receiving payment. BDC offers working capital solutions designed for these challenges, featuring extended amortization periods and payment holidays of up to 24 months.
For companies seeking to expand production capacity, BDC provides customized financing, including mezzanine and quasi-equity options, to protect cash flow and support investments in areas such as automation and facility expansion. The LIFT program specifically finances the adoption of Canadian technologies, including artificial intelligence and advanced automation.
BDC is also focusing on fostering innovation within the sector. The StrongNorth Fund invests in startups developing defence or dual-use technologies, aiming to accelerate the development of critical domestic technologies and facilitate their transition from research and development to market readiness.
