BDC helps greenhouse maker diversify exports beyond U.S.

The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) has supported Cedar-Built Greenhouses, based in Abbotsford, British Columbia, in its efforts to diversify exports beyond the United States. Company CEO Scott Frost stated that BDC's consultants helped him identify potential markets and develop a strategy for international expansion.

Cedar-Built Greenhouses manufactures handcrafted greenhouse kits from Western Red Cedar. The company experienced significant sales growth following the COVID-19 pandemic, with 90% of its sales directed to the U.S. Frost began considering export diversification when the U.S. administration started threatening and implementing tariffs on Canadian goods.

Although Cedar-Built Greenhouses was not directly subject to U.S. tariffs, the company's sales in the United States fell by 30%. Frost noted that the threat of tariffs prompted customers to seek alternative options. In response, Frost approached BDC for assistance in exploring new export markets. The company had previously worked with BDC to develop its digital strategy and update its website, a crucial step for international expansion.

A specialist consultant assigned by BDC assisted Frost in evaluating the business, conducting market research, and developing a concrete action plan. The plan identified the most promising markets and outlined strategies for market entry. The consultant also helped the company apply for a CanExport grant to support the implementation of the action plan. Frost has begun executing the plan and has traveled to the United Kingdom, which he views as his most significant potential next market.
