BDC Offers Guidance on Maximizing Business Coach Effectiveness

The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) has published a comprehensive guide aimed at helping entrepreneurs maximize the benefits of engaging a business coach. The guide underscores that a willingness to change is essential for business owners to derive the greatest value from coaching.

BDC explains that a business coach can offer an external perspective on challenges and assist in developing leadership skills, but will not make decisions for the entrepreneur. Instead, the coach serves as a sounding board for ideas. Michelle Feder, Director at BDC Advisory Services, notes that entrepreneurs often face isolation and that a coach can provide understanding and validation.

The guide outlines common scenarios where coaching is beneficial, including strengthening leadership abilities, improving company culture, identifying growth barriers, or resolving specific business issues. Glenn Yonemitsu, also of BDC Advisory Services, suggests that coaching helps leaders prepare for future challenges by focusing on forward-looking strategies.

BDC advises entrepreneurs to meet with potential coaches multiple times before committing to a long-term relationship. The bank stresses the importance of finding a coach with whom there is good rapport and mutual respect for effective coaching. A coach should also be capable of addressing difficult topics honestly and directly, while employing strong listening skills to guide the entrepreneur toward their own conclusions.
