BDC Outlines Digital Transformation Paths for SMEs in AI Era
The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) has published guidance for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) on navigating digital transformation and leveraging AI for efficiency gains. The focus is on strategic business context over technology alone.

The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) has released a guide for Canadian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) on how to approach digital transformation and leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to improve efficiency.
BDC suggests that the traditional linear path to digital transformation, starting with digitizing paperwork and implementing core systems, is no longer sufficient. The rise of generative AI, flexible cloud infrastructure, and low-code development has introduced new routes to digital maturity. Tyler Lockyer, Director of Client Delivery at BDC Advisory Services, emphasizes that the business's operating model, objectives, and pain points are paramount, rather than the specific tool itself.
Jill Anderson, Senior Business Advisor at BDC Advisory Services, adds that while core business software like accounting, CRM, and ERP remain essential, many businesses are experimenting with more advanced approaches or combining multiple strategies. "AI adoption is not separate from your technology strategy—it is part of it," Lockyer stated.
BDC outlines five key strategic paths for increasing digital maturity: 1. Purchasing core business software, which digitizes operations and creates structured data. Modern platforms increasingly embed AI capabilities. 2. Adopting generative AI for personal productivity, such as drafting emails and summarizing information.
The article advises businesses to select their path based on their starting point and desired outcomes. It stresses that while technology is important, it must support business needs and goals to yield meaningful results. BDC's perspective advocates for a pragmatic approach, integrating technological advancements seamlessly with business processes and strategic objectives.
