BDC Releases Guide to Understanding Deductible Business Expenses

The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) has released a guide aimed at clarifying the principles of deductible business expenses for companies. The publication intends to help entrepreneurs understand which expenditures related to their business operations are eligible for tax deductions.

The BDC guide emphasizes that deductible expenses must be incurred for the purpose of earning business income and must be reasonable in the circumstances. While the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) provides a list of common business expenses, the deductibility often hinges on the nature and purpose of the expense in relation to the business.

The guide also highlights the importance of matching expenses to the correct fiscal year in which they were incurred. Although corporations can choose their fiscal year-end, their tax return is due within six months of that date. For self-employed individuals, tax filings are generally due by April 30, with payment deadlines and potential interest charges beginning May 1.

BDC offers this resource as part of its commitment to supporting Canadian small businesses. A clear understanding of deductible expenses can help businesses manage their finances more effectively and ensure compliance with tax regulations. Maintaining original receipts to substantiate all claimed expenses is also a key recommendation.
