BDO audits new standard for digital sovereignty
BDO AG, an independent auditing firm, has verified the framework for the new European Sovereign Stack Standard (ES³). The standard assesses the level of digital sovereignty in cloud and IT services.

German auditing firm BDO AG has verified the new European Sovereign Stack Standard (ES³), a framework designed to assess the level of digital sovereignty in cloud and IT services. The standard was introduced in April 2026.
The ES³ standard, developed by Schwarz Digits, aims to provide a practice-oriented industry standard for evaluating the digital sovereignty of IT services. BDO acted as an independent auditor in this development, ensuring the reliability of the underlying Sovereignty Maturity Level (SML) framework.
Digital sovereignty has become a key theme in Europe as countries and companies seek to ensure control and security over their data and systems, independent of external influences. The ES³ standard offers a concrete tool to achieve this objective and promote digital autonomy within the EU.
BDO's role as an auditor highlights the firm's expertise in evaluating IT services and cloud solutions. The company provides consulting services to organizations looking to enhance or ensure their digital sovereignty and comply with new standards.
