BDP outlines key regulatory updates for German psychological practice in March 2016

The Association of German Psychologists (BDP) has issued a summary of significant regulatory developments affecting the psychotherapy sector as of March 2016. A primary update concerns a Federal Social Court ruling that deems psychotherapy applications approved by default if health insurance providers fail to respond within the mandated timeframe.

Financial framework changes were also enacted, with the assessment committee restricting structure-based surcharges for therapy sessions starting April 1, 2016. The association noted that this change represents a decrease in earnings for certain providers. Additionally, administrative processes were streamlined, allowing all contract physicians to issue rehabilitation referrals using a single standardized form.

Beyond administrative and financial updates, the BDP highlighted new resources for patient care, including material on eating disorders and a multilingual portal for sexual health. The organization also addressed ongoing academic discourse, citing studies on the impact of mindfulness-based therapy on chronic pain and the clinical challenges of treating war-related trauma.
