The German Association of Digital Publishers and Newspaper Publishers (BDZV) is actively working to secure the economic future of the press in the digital age. Association leaders Matthias Ditzen-Blanke and Stefan Hilscher have emphasized the need for proactive solutions and increased unity among publishers facing significant market challenges.

Ditzen-Blanke and Hilscher highlighted that the economic shifts in the media market have fostered stronger networking and collaboration among publishing houses. This cooperation focuses on developing subscription and membership models, leveraging data-driven products, and innovating in the advertising sector, aiming to establish a sustainable economic basis for independent journalism.

"We want and will deliver solutions. If politics falters, we will move forward ourselves," stated Hilscher, outlining the BDZV's new assertive stance. The organization is transitioning from its previous member fee model based on circulation to a revenue-based system, implemented with notable speed, to ensure fairness and future viability.

The BDZV aims to position itself as a "think tank for democracy and the future of media," actively engaging with policymakers. A key proposal is the introduction of a digital levy, which the association believes will help balance the playing field and fund future investments. They advocate for a targeted levy over a general digital tax to ensure funds directly benefit the media sector and potentially pave the way for a 0% VAT on press products.
