Beacon Acquires Software Firms, Applies AI to Main Street Businesses

Beacon Software has acquired more than 40 software businesses over the past two years, targeting market segments ranging from campgrounds to labor unions and youth sports organizations. The company aims to enhance these businesses by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into their operations.

According to founder and CEO Nilam Ganenthiran, Beacon is modernizing decades-old software tools and adding AI features. The company also utilizes its own AI and data management software to aid in operations and planning. This strategy is designed to serve what Ganenthiran calls "Main Street-style" businesses, which he believes are frequently neglected by the enterprise-focused AI industry.

"We think that it is existential that they get AI at the same rate that the rest of the economy does, but today they aren't," Ganenthiran stated. He noted that these smaller businesses are often forgotten by larger technology companies and labs. Beacon's approach involves consolidating and improving these businesses, providing them with modernization and development through its new AI platform.

Beacon announced a $225 million Series C funding round in June. Unlike traditional private equity firms, Beacon intends to hold its portfolio companies for the long term, prioritizing growth over cost-cutting. The company seeks to expand AI adoption within these traditional sectors.

On September 17, Beacon also announced the acquisition of Haize Labs, a company specializing in AI training and safety. This acquisition aims to strengthen Beacon's internal AI platform. Haize Labs' co-founder and CEO, Leonard Tang, will join Beacon as VP of AI Research.
