Belgian Regulator Investigates Eden Hazard's Stake Social Media Posts
Belgium's Gaming Commission has opened an investigation into former football star Eden Hazard's social media posts promoting the Stake betting platform. The probe examines potential violations of advertising bans.

Belgium's Gaming Commission (BGC) has officially launched an investigation into promotional content shared by former Chelsea star Eden Hazard for his involvement with Stake. The probe centers on whether Hazard's social media activity bypassed the country's strict advertising bans.
Regulators are assessing if Hazard's posts, reaching approximately 27 million followers, were specifically targeted at Belgian consumers. Belgium enforces some of the most rigorous gambling promotion restrictions globally. A phased ban on gambling ads has been in place since July 2023, moving towards a total prohibition by January 1, 2028.
The operator Stake does not hold a domestic Belgian license and is listed on the BGC's blacklist of unauthorized websites. A spokesperson for the Gaming Commission stated that the investigation will determine the extent to which the advertising is targeted at people in Belgium, which is prohibited. Hazard's large following on Instagram makes this a key point.
This inquiry is part of a wider crackdown on the normalization of gambling among young adults. Belgium standardized the minimum legal age for all gambling activities, including sports betting, to 21 years old in September 2024. If found in breach, Hazard could face content removal orders and administrative sanctions.
