Belgium to introduce road toll for vehicles from 2027
Belgium plans to introduce a toll for all vehicles under 3.5 tons starting May 2027. Electric vehicles will benefit from a reduced charge.
Belgium is preparing to implement a road toll system for vehicular traffic beginning in May 2027. The new system will apply to all vehicles weighing under 3.5 tons, affecting both Belgian and foreign registered cars.
According to preliminary plans, the toll cost will vary based on vehicle type. Electric vehicles are slated for an annual fee of approximately 90 euros, while vehicles with internal combustion engines will face charges of up to 125 euros per year. Short-term options, ranging from one day to two months, will also be available.
The toll system is expected to be adopted across all three Belgian regions: Flanders, Wallonia, and Brussels. Payment can be made through an online platform or at fuel stations. Authorities will monitor compliance using cameras, with fines for violations set at 70 euros.
Belgian authorities are currently examining how the national vehicle tax will be adjusted in conjunction with the new toll. Potential discrepancies in tax relief for Belgian drivers compared to foreign ones may echo Germany's failed attempt at a similar system, which was halted by the European Court of Justice in 2019.
