Believe Launched Amidst Digital Music Disruption

Music company Believe marks its 20th anniversary, having launched in 2005 at the height of the digital music industry's disruption. At the time, major record labels were grappling with declining revenues post-Napster and focusing on short-term revenue drivers like ringtones. Believe, however, anticipated the long-term impact of digital channels on artist development and music distribution.

Founder and CEO Denis Ladegaillerie recalled that major label executives believed phone personalization, such as ringtones, was the future of digital music, and that the internet would hinder artist development. Believe adopted a different strategy, positioning itself to quickly identify and capitalize on new digital opportunities and revenue streams.

In 2005, digital music was nascent but held significant growth potential. Apple's iTunes Music Store had made purchasing digital music accessible, and devices like the iPod brought digital music listening into the mainstream. Social media and new distribution platforms like MySpace were also beginning to reshape music consumption habits.

Believe established its business on a distinct vision, recognizing the far-reaching implications of digital transformation. Ladegaillerie highlighted that technology democratized access to music and shifted the focus of artist development to digital platforms. The company initially concentrated on providing digital services to independent French hip-hop artists, filling a gap that larger entities were not addressing.
