Benchmark Senior Living Implements New Environmental Approach to Dementia Care

Benchmark Senior Living has introduced a new environmental design strategy, titled Inspired Spaces, across 68 of its memory care neighborhoods in the Northeastern United States. The initiative shifts the focus of care by embedding functional zones directly into the living environment, aimed at encouraging residents to perform familiar tasks and maintain daily routines independently.

These zones are tailored to individual resident interests and abilities, ranging from nature-focused areas for gardening to creative studios for arts and crafts. By applying Montessori principles to the design of these spaces, the company intends to foster a sense of purpose and self-identity among residents experiencing cognitive decline. The strategy is designed to complement existing clinical care, providing opportunities for engagement that are accessible throughout the day.

Company leadership noted that the move reflects a broader industry shift toward person-centered environments, which evidence suggests can reduce agitation and improve the overall quality of life for those with dementia. The implementation of these spaces is supported by ongoing staff training, with many directors pursuing certification as Montessori dementia care professionals.

Benchmark Senior Living, which has nearly 30 years of experience in the senior care sector, is now prioritizing these environmental adjustments alongside its traditional care programming.
