Benewake Introduces Near-Field LiDAR for Safer Robot Interaction

Benewake, based in Beijing, has introduced its NOVA20 solid-state LiDAR sensor designed for near-field perception in embodied robots. The sensor delivers real-time distance measurements across the critical 5 cm to 1-meter zone around the robot's body, aiming to reduce collision risks and improve safety during physical interactions.

Conventional perception systems in robots face limitations in close-quarters operations. Vision-centric systems may experience latency, and self-occlusion from robot limbs can create blind spots. Contact sensors only react after physical contact. Benewake's NOVA20 addresses these challenges by providing reliable distance data in the critical proximity range.

The NOVA20 features a 20-point detection array with a 40-degree field of view. Its compact, solid-state design weighs less than 5 grams and consumes under 1W, allowing for distributed deployment on various parts of the robot. The technology uses time-division multiplexing for channel readout, eliminating false obstacle detections and enhancing sensor reliability.

Key applications include detecting ground edges and drop-offs near the robot's feet, avoiding collisions with moving limbs and body sides, and providing proximity data for pre-contact deceleration. Founded in 2015, Benewake specializes in LiDAR technologies for robotics and physical-world perception.
