Bengaluru court issues gag order on content related to actor Yash's film "Toxic"
A Bengaluru court has issued an interim injunction against the publication of alleged "false, defamatory, or derogatory content" concerning the upcoming film "Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups." The order was sought by the film's producers to prevent the circulation of such material.
A Bengaluru court has granted an ex parte temporary injunction against the publication of alleged "false, malicious, defamatory, or derogatory content" related to the upcoming film "Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups," starring actor Yash. The producers, KVN Productions, approached the court just days before the film's scheduled release on August 26, 2026.
The injunction is in effect until the next hearing on September 28. The case names social media platform X and unidentified individuals as "John Doe/Ashok Kumar" as defendants. They are prohibited from circulating any material deemed "false, malicious, defamatory or derogatory" about the film through any medium.
While the producers have also sought a permanent injunction, the current court order does not explicitly restrict reviews or criticism of the film. KVN Productions is required to serve copies of the complaint and related documents to the defendants. Failure to comply with procedural rules could lead to the automatic cancellation of the temporary injunction.
This case reflects a growing trend in India where film producers are utilizing legal channels to control negative publicity and user-generated content. Previous instances have seen court orders used to block film ratings on platforms like BookMyShow and IMDb, raising concerns about potential limitations on free speech and the use of the judicial system for censorship.
