Berkshire Hathaway buys homebuilder Taylor Morrison, bolsters housing market position

Berkshire Hathaway, under the leadership of its new CEO Greg Abel, has announced a significant expansion into the U.S. housing market with the acquisition of Taylor Morrison, the nation's seventh-largest homebuilder. The deal, finalized at the end of May, substantially increases Berkshire's footprint in the construction sector.

By integrating Taylor Morrison with its existing Clayton Properties subsidiary, already a major player in U.S. home construction, Berkshire Hathaway positions itself as the fourth-largest builder of site-built homes in the country. This strategic move signals the company's long-term commitment to growth in the real estate sector, despite current market challenges such as elevated interest rates and a cooling demand following the pandemic housing boom.

The move follows other construction-related acquisitions by the company under Abel's tenure. In early July, Mungo Homes, part of Clayton Properties, acquired McGuinn Homes. Additionally, Berkshire Hathaway has increased its stake in Lennar Corporation and initiated a position in D.R. Horton.

Stephanie McCarty, Chief Marketing Officer at Taylor Morrison, clarified that Clayton Properties' site-built home operations will be consolidated under Taylor Morrison. The manufactured and modular home business will remain under Clayton Homes. McCarty indicated that the company is studying how to best integrate the various regional builder brands under the Taylor Morrison umbrella, considering each brand's existing equity and consumer recognition.
