Berlin Election: Left Party Wins, Faces Media Criticism

The Left Party (Die Linke) celebrated a victory in the Berlin state election, but the party's success has been overshadowed by strong criticism from the city's media. The press has largely portrayed the party as antisemitic, which could impact its ability to form a governing coalition with the SPD and the Greens.

Several factors contributed to Die Linke's win, including sustained support from young voters, the party's positioning as a champion of tenants' interests, and an intensive "door-to-door" campaign. Party officials stated they knocked on approximately 250,000 doors during the campaign.

Meanwhile, major media outlets have focused on accusing Die Linke's local branches, particularly in the Neukölln and Mitte districts, of antisemitism. A high volume of articles published during the campaign highlighted statements by individual politicians and party guests, as well as their connections to anti-Zionist views, which were amplified into scandals.

One example of controversy involved rapper Dahabflex's performance at a Neukölln branch event. His lyric "Death to the IDF" was widely interpreted as an antisemitic call for murder. The rapper himself stated he was referring to the institution of the Israeli army, not individuals, and accused it of complicity in genocide.

These accusations, combined with fears over the implementation of the "Deutsche Wohnen & Co enteignen" (Expropriate Deutsche Wohnen & Co.) referendum demanded by the party, have created an image of Die Linke as a threat to Berlin. The media's critical portrayal has continued even after the election.
