Berlin Police Deploy AI Surveillance Cameras to Combat Crime

Berlin police have initiated a new plan to combat crime by deploying surveillance cameras equipped with artificial intelligence (AI). The pilot phase of this initiative commenced on September 24 in an area identified as having a high rate of criminal activity.

The AI-powered cameras are set to be installed and tested over the first four weeks in the Kottbusser Tor area before being fully operational. The police department intends to expand the system's use to other areas within the city that experience significant crime.

These cameras utilize "spatial AI" technology to analyze human movements, aiming to detect potentially criminal and violent actions. When the AI system identifies such behavior, a display screen activates to show relevant information, and officers receive notifications to assess the situation and respond accordingly.

This marks another step by German authorities to integrate AI into law enforcement. Earlier this year, Germany's finance, interior, and justice ministries announced plans to modernize core security agencies and enhance the fight against organized crime, including financial offenses, money laundering, and drug trafficking, by incorporating AI technologies.
