Better Use of Patient Data Could Reduce Physician Burnout

Physician burnout, a significant driver of healthcare professionals leaving the industry, is largely attributed to siloed and disconnected patient data systems. This fragmentation forces physicians to spend excessive time on administrative tasks and data retrieval rather than direct patient care, with some primary care physicians dedicating over half their workday to electronic health record (EHR) duties.
The current system creates inefficiencies where critical patient information is not readily shared between different care providers. For instance, primary care physicians may not be alerted when a patient is admitted to the hospital or requires follow-up, and medication changes might not reach all relevant parties, increasing the risk of adverse drug interactions.
With physician shortages projected to reach up to 86,000 by 2036 in the U.S., a substantial percentage of doctors are considering leaving their jobs. While wellness initiatives are often proposed, experts suggest these are insufficient to address the core systemic issues.
Effie Carlson, CEO of Watershed Health, and Monica Rivera, its chief growth officer, propose that the primary solution lies in technological advancements that enable seamless and real-time sharing of patient data among all healthcare providers. By ensuring data moves with the patient, physicians can receive timely alerts and access a comprehensive health picture, allowing them to focus on patient treatment instead of data detective work. This shift aims to improve both physician well-being and patient safety.
