Bill Gates Calls for US Legislation to Regulate AI Development
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has urged the U.S. Congress to enact legislation regulating artificial intelligence development. He stated that self-regulation by the industry alone is insufficient.
Microsoft co-founder and billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates has called on the U.S. Congress to create legislation to regulate the development of artificial intelligence (AI). Gates stated in an interview with NBC News that "nobody thinks self-regulation is sufficient."
When asked if Washington needed to legislate, Gates responded affirmatively, stating that law enforcement and policymakers must be involved in discussing necessary safety measures and oversight. He emphasized that these requirements must be mandatory, though he acknowledged they might add some burden, they would not significantly slow down the industry's progress.
During the interview, Gates did not dismiss the risk of AI potentially causing human extinction within years. However, he also cautioned against another danger: malicious actors already possess the capability to cause mass casualties using AI. He described the combination of "malicious people and the latest AI tools" as an unprecedentedly powerful threat.
Gates has previously warned about the risks posed by future AI developments, noting that no government globally is prepared for the societal changes AI may bring. He has also expressed concerns about AI's potential to eliminate jobs and significantly impact economies.
