Bill Gates proposes tax on robots replacing human jobs

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has suggested taxing companies that replace human workers with robots. The revenue could provide income security for those displaced.

1 October 2026

Microsoft co-founder and billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates has proposed a tax on companies that utilize robots to replace human workers. This measure aims to ensure that individuals who lose their jobs to automation still have income security and access to social benefits.

Gates suggested that the tax levied on robots should be equivalent to the federal insurance contributions currently paid on human workers' wages. These contributions fund programs like Social Security and Medicare. By imposing a similar tax on robots, society could maintain tax revenue and provide economic support to displaced workers.

Gates has previously expressed concerns about the impact of AI and robotics on the job market, particularly on white-collar positions. He noted that while physical robots are currently developing at a slower pace than AI systems, the speed at which humanoid robots will catch up is often underestimated.

The proposed tax could serve a dual purpose: slowing down the adoption of automation that displame humans and generating funds for retraining programs and strengthening the social safety net. Gates first voiced support for a similar concept, a "robot tax," in 2017 and continues to see it as a relevant part of the response to AI's societal impact.
