Billion-dollar startup veterans shift focus to AI
New data from CB Insights tracks 59 former unicorn founders who have launched new AI-focused ventures during 2025 and 2026.

CB Insights has identified a cohort of 59 founders who previously built billion-dollar companies and have now pivoted to the AI sector. The research highlights that many of these leaders are opting to remain within their original domains, with enterprise software and financial services seeing the highest concentration of repeat entrepreneurship.
Data indicates a strategic pivot among leaders from the consumer and retail sectors, who are now exclusively targeting business-to-business operations rather than consumer markets. By applying their experience in scaling operations to AI development, these founders are building automated systems for supply chains, robotics, and administrative tasks.
Five companies in this cohort—Recursive Superintelligence, Core Automation, Astromech, Upscale AI, and Genki Robotics—have already surpassed the $1 billion valuation mark. These firms are largely focused on frontier technologies, including AI development, computing infrastructure, and biotechnology. Executives note that these new ventures often utilize smaller, more specialized teams compared to their previous startups, leveraging automation to scale output.
