Billionaires Fueling U.S. Midterms with Record Spending
Billionaire spending in U.S. elections has surged significantly since the Citizens United ruling. Nearly $1.6 billion has already been channeled into the current midterm election cycle.
Billionaires across the political spectrum have already poured nearly $1.6 billion into the U.S. 2026 midterm elections, according to Americans for Tax Fairness. This amount marks a substantial increase compared to previous election cycles.
Approximately 65% of these funds have been directed towards Republican campaigns. Among the largest individual donors are tech figures like Elon Musk, with an estimated $90.6 million. Jeff Yass, founder of Susquehanna International Group, has donated around $90 million, and Miriam Adelson contributed $40 million to Republican PACs.
On the Democratic side, George Soros is the leading donor, directing $102 million to his family's Democracy PAC. Other tech magnates, such as LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, have also supported Democratic candidates.
These expenditures have a direct impact on election outcomes. Statistics indicate that over 90% of House candidates and 80% of Senate candidates who outspent their opponents won their elections. Funds often originate from large individual contributors and political action committees (PACs).
Emerging industries like cryptocurrency and artificial intelligence (AI) are also becoming significant funders. Players in these sectors frequently channel money through PACs, which can obscure the original sources of funding. For instance, the crypto-funded Fairshake PAC and the AI-focused Leading the Future PAC support a broad range of candidates regardless of party affiliation.
