Bimetals Offer Solution to Copper Supply and Demand Imbalance
Copperweld, a manufacturer of bimetallic conductors, outlines how these materials can optimize copper use and stabilize markets amid rising demand and constrained supply.

Franklin, Tenn. – Copperweld, a producer of bimetallic wire and cable, is highlighting the role of its products in addressing the growing imbalance between global copper demand and supply. The company argues that bimetallic conductors offer a strategic way to manage copper allocation across various industries.
Global demand for copper is surging, driven by sectors like data centers, electric vehicles, and renewable energy infrastructure. However, the pace of new mine development, declining ore grades, and lengthy permitting processes present significant challenges to increasing copper supply. This situation creates price volatility and uncertainty for manufacturers and mining companies alike.
Copperweld proposes that bimetallic conductors, such as Copperweld® Copper-Clad Aluminum (CCA) and Copper-Clad Steel (CCS), provide a solution by using copper more efficiently. In these conductors, copper is applied to the surface where its electrical conductivity is needed, allowing for equivalent performance with a significantly reduced copper mass compared to solid copper.
"Bimetals don't replace copper. They improve how copper is allocated across the economy, reducing high-volume copper use while preserving copper for the roles where it is truly indispensable," stated Josh Vogel, CFO at Copperweld. The company asserts that shifting applications like residential and commercial branch-circuit wiring to bimetals frees up solid copper for critical uses where its properties are irreplaceable.
By reducing demand in less critical applications, bimetallic conductors aim to create a more efficient copper market. This strategy, Copperweld suggests, can strengthen mining economics, stabilize the copper market, and ensure long-term value for industries reliant on the essential metal.
