Binance Halts Withdrawals Following $6.3 Billion Security Breach
Binance has suspended withdrawals after a security breach resulted in the loss of $6.3 billion in assets, marking the largest theft in cryptocurrency history.

Binance, the largest cryptocurrency exchange by volume, is investigating a security breach that resulted in the unauthorized transfer of $6.3 billion. The company has temporarily suspended all withdrawals while it conducts security assessments, with services expected to resume within 48 hours.
Preliminary findings suggest the breach originated from a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer. This access allegedly allowed the perpetrator to execute unauthorized withdrawal transactions. While the exchange reported that it successfully froze $3 billion in assets by working with blockchain partners, the incident remains under active investigation.
To mitigate user losses, Binance stated it will utilize its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and internal capital to provide reimbursement. The exchange plans to release a detailed technical report once forensic analysis is finalized. Meanwhile, other industry platforms, including Aave, have temporarily restricted lending operations in response to the event.
This incident coincides with broader regulatory scrutiny of the digital asset sector in India, where the Enforcement Directorate is investigating multiple platforms for alleged foreign exchange violations. The breach follows a recent $2.6 million exploit at the prediction market Polymarket, contributing to heightened security concerns across the crypto industry.
