Binance identifies sophisticated methods behind multi-billion dollar attempted heist

Binance revealed on Tuesday that attackers initiated a months-long campaign to extract $6.34 billion from its digital wallets. According to investigations by the FBI and security firm TRM, the operation was conducted by North Korean actors who utilized social engineering and custom-developed malware to target the exchange’s infrastructure.

The operation commenced as early as June and culminated last Thursday when attackers breached an engineer's laptop, gaining unauthorized access to wallet assets. While the attempted theft reached a record-breaking $6.34 billion, Binance stated it has successfully frozen or recovered $2.85 billion of the compromised assets.

To address the remaining shortfall, the company has allocated internal funds to cover customer losses, directing stakeholders to its public Proof of Reserves page for verification. This incident highlights ongoing cybersecurity challenges for major cryptocurrency exchanges as they become primary targets for state-sponsored advanced persistent threat groups.
