Biologist Sofia Doello Receives Emmy Noether Grant for Metabolism Research
Biologist Sofia Doello has been awarded approximately 1.63 million euros through the Emmy Noether program to investigate how microorganisms reactivate their metabolism after prolonged dormancy.

Munich – Biologist Sofia Doello, a research group leader at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU), has received a prestigious Emmy Noether grant totaling around 1.63 million euros. The funding will support her research into how microorganisms reactivate their metabolism following extended periods of dormancy.
Doello's project, titled "Metabolic foundation of developmental transitions," will focus on understanding the mechanisms by which cyanobacteria transition from a dormant state back to active growth. Many bacteria can survive harsh environmental conditions by entering a sleeplike state, remaining inactive until conditions improve.
The research aims to uncover fundamental principles of survival and cell regeneration by examining how bacteria utilize stored resources, restart their metabolic processes, and rebuild essential cellular machinery like photosynthesis. This work holds potential medical relevance, as dormant states are linked to the survival of pathogenic bacteria and the development of antibiotic resistance.
Beyond fundamental biology, the findings are expected to deepen the understanding of microbial adaptation to environmental change. They may also yield new ideas for utilizing cyanobacteria in sustainable biotechnology and enhance knowledge of bacterial resilience in various biological systems.
