Biotech Startup Investment Steady Amid AI Funding Surge
Biotech startup funding remained stable between $36 billion and $40 billion globally, even as AI funding dominated venture capital. 2026 investment is on track to stay within this range.

Biotech startup investment has maintained a steady course, hovering between $36 billion and $40 billion globally in recent years, according to Crunchbase data. Despite a surge in venture capital towards Artificial Intelligence (AI), biotech funding is expected to remain within this range for 2026.
While overall venture investment reached record levels in the first half of this year, a significant portion was directed towards a few large generative AI companies. This left a respectable share for the biotech sector, with over $6 billion allocated to AI-focused biotechs so far this year.
The largest biotech funding round of the year was a $2.1 billion Series B for London-based Isomorphic Labs, an AI-first drug design and development company. Other significant financings include Earendil Labs' $787 million for its AI platforms for protein therapeutics and Chai Discovery's $400 million Series C for its AI applications in drug discovery.
Not all heavily funded biotechs are AI-centric. For instance, South San Francisco-based NewLimit, a longevity startup focused on developing medicines to restore youthful function in old cells, raised $435 million in a Series C round. The report also noted a trend of early-stage funding dominating the biotech pipeline, with many later-stage companies opting for public offerings rather than further venture rounds.
Overall, biotech funding and exits are holding up at healthy levels this year. While conditions are less exuberant compared to the AI investment blitz, the continued accumulation of funding at the intersection of AI and biotech may lead to increased enthusiasm in the coming quarters.
