Bira 91 Faces Insolvency Threat Over 11.8 Million Euro Dues
Craft beer maker Bira 91 is facing a fresh insolvency threat after glass manufacturer Hindusthan National Glass & Industries Ltd (HNGIL) served a default notice over alleged unpaid dues totaling 11.8 million euros.

Craft beer producer Bira 91, known for its Bira 91 brand, is once again facing a threat of insolvency. Glass manufacturer Hindusthan National Glass & Industries Ltd (HNGIL) has issued a default notice to B9 Beverages Ltd, the parent company of Bira 91, over alleged unpaid dues.
HNGIL is claiming 11.77 million euros for customized glass bottles manufactured against confirmed purchase orders, which the brewer has allegedly not collected. The notice gives B9 Beverages 10 days to clear the dues or provide evidence of a dispute, failing which HNGIL can petition for the initiation of a corporate insolvency resolution process.
This development follows a legal notice sent in May by HNGIL, urging B9 Beverages to settle its outstanding payments and provide a schedule for picking up the bottles. HNGIL previously stated that over 5.1 million customized bottles, valued at more than 7 million euros, remained stored at its facilities. The glassmaker claims significant dues are still unpaid despite the encashment of bank guarantees.
The fresh threat comes as Bira 91 continues to grapple with severe financial difficulties. Reports indicate the company has been out of production since September 2025 due to mounting debt and outstanding payments to employees and vendors. The company's debts and other liabilities are reportedly around 1,000 million euros.
Founded in 2015, Bira 91 emerged as one of India's early craft beer brands. However, the company's financial standing has significantly deteriorated, and it is now seeking recapitalization to clear its debts and resume operations.
