Birdcall Plans Midwestern Expansion, Shifting Focus From Coastal Markets

Birdcall, a 17-unit fast-casual chicken franchise based in Colorado, has announced plans to expand significantly into the American Midwest. The company intends to open close to 100 new restaurants across six states within the next five years, with a primary focus on Ohio (up to 30 locations), Missouri (up to 18), and Wisconsin (10 to 14 units).

This strategic shift away from high-cost coastal markets like New York and California contrasts with the approach of many competing restaurant chains. Justin Livingston, VP of Franchise Development, cited the Midwest's combination of dense population, commuter traffic, and community presence, while offering lower operational costs compared to coastal areas or even Birdcall's home state of Colorado.

The chain operates in the "elevated fast casual" chicken sector, featuring a menu that includes rotating items like its Korean BBQ-glazed K-Pop sandwich. Birdcall's restaurant design accommodates 125 to 150 seats, a larger footprint than many competitors. The franchise primarily attracts experienced multi-unit operators.

Birdcall has already secured its first deal in Indianapolis, with franchisee Nikunj Patel committing to open five locations. This Midwestern expansion signals a deliberate strategy to pursue growth in markets with more favorable real estate and operating costs.
