Block initiates new round of staff reductions following Q3 earnings
Fintech firm Block has begun a second phase of layoffs affecting its Cash App and Square support teams, following a previous reduction earlier this year.

Block, the fintech firm led by Jack Dorsey, initiated a new round of workforce reductions on Wednesday. The layoffs primarily impact the company’s Customer Ops, Risk Ops, and Learning & Content Operations divisions, which support the Cash App and Square product lines.
The staffing cuts follow the company’s third-quarter earnings report, where Block raised its 2026 gross profit forecast to $12.63 billion. Despite the improved financial guidance, the firm is restructuring teams to consolidate roles and shift reporting lines.
While the company has not disclosed the total number of employees affected, it stated that those impacted will receive severance packages and transition support consistent with the February 2026 reduction, though specific terms remain undisclosed. This move aligns with the firm's broader strategy to use automation and artificial intelligence to operate with smaller teams.
CEO Jack Dorsey previously attributed organizational slimming to the rapid development of intelligence tools. Block continues to prioritize investments in AI-driven technologies, recently launching its Dessa voice model as part of a pivot toward automated operations.
