Blocked Gutters Can Cause Uninsured Damage, Warns R+V Insurance

R+V Versicherung AG is warning homeowners that blocked gutters can lead to significant and costly damage to building facades and structures, with little to no insurance coverage. As autumn leaves and debris accumulate, they can obstruct the flow of rainwater, causing it to overflow and seep into building materials.

According to the insurance provider, damage resulting from clogged gutters is generally not covered by standard building insurance policies. Christine Gilles, an expert at R+V Versicherung, emphasizes that property owners are responsible for the regular maintenance of their gutters. She advises that properties near trees are particularly susceptible and should be inspected and cleaned at least annually.

Gilles recommends thorough cleaning, especially after the fall season. For those who find the task difficult or unsafe, hiring a professional service is a viable option. The company also points out that preventative measures, such as gutter guards or nets, can help reduce the risk of blockages.

R+V Versicherung highlights that while water damage from clogged gutters may not be insured, other types of water-related damage, such as internal leaks, might be covered. The insurer urges property owners to proactively maintain their gutters to prevent potential financial losses.
