Blue Origin Identifies Engine Valve as Origin of Rocket Accident
Blue Origin has provided its first substantial update on the May 28, 2026, New Glenn rocket failure, confirming the anomaly originated in a BE-4 engine's main oxygen valve.
Blue Origin has offered its first significant update regarding the catastrophic failure of its New Glenn rocket and associated launch pad infrastructure at Cape Canaveral, Florida, on May 28, 2026. The incident resulted in the complete loss of the vehicle and extensive damage to the launch site.
Company CEO Dave Limp stated that investigative work is ongoing to fully understand the anomaly. He confirmed that the issue originated in the main oxygen valve of one of the seven BE-4 engines powering the rocket's first stage, aligning with earlier speculation.
"The anomaly originated at the main oxygen valve on one of the BE-4 engines, which was later confirmed by hardware recovery and inspections," Limp said. "Extensive component-level and engine hotfire tests have been conducted to understand the failure mode better and inform mitigations."
The accident caused significant damage to the launch pad, requiring extensive repairs and reconstruction. Blue Origin is focused on ensuring the reliability of its BE-4 engines before proceeding with future launches.
