Blue Origin's first outside funding round 'oversubscribed,' CEO says

Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp stated on Tuesday that the space company's first external funding round is "oversubscribed" and has not yet closed. Limp made the remarks during a technology summit in Washington, D.C.

Until now, Blue Origin, founded by Amazon leader Jeff Bezos, has been entirely funded by Bezos personally. Since its inception in 2000, Bezos is reported to have invested $30 billion in the company. The move to engage external investors signifies a major shift for Blue Origin as it aims to expand its operations and develop new technologies.

Investor interest in space companies has surged recently, both in private and public markets. SpaceX's successful IPO in June further highlighted the sector's potential for a rapidly growing commercial space economy. Limp commented that the investor community's strong embrace of the funding round demonstrates the infinite possibilities within space.

Blue Origin also plans to return its New Glenn rocket to flight before the end of the year, despite a significant explosion at its Cape Canaveral launchpad in May. Limp indicated that approximately 1,000 employees are working around the clock to repair damages and adhere to the schedule. This expansion and the need to attract talent are key drivers for the new capital raise.
