BMO Financial Group Completes Sale of Finance Units to Stonepeak
BMO Financial Group has finalized the divestiture of its Transportation Finance and Vendor Finance divisions to the investment firm Stonepeak.

BMO Financial Group has completed the sale of its Transportation Finance and Vendor Finance businesses to Stonepeak. The transaction, involving assets valued at approximately C$11 billion, represents the initial transfer of about 75% of the portfolio.
The divestiture aligns with BMO’s broader strategy to optimize its balance sheet and focus on core banking operations. By offloading these specialized finance segments, the bank intends to allocate capital more efficiently across its primary business lines in North America.
Stonepeak will integrate these portfolios into its existing asset management infrastructure. The remaining 25% of the assets are expected to transition in the coming months as part of the established agreement. This move reflects a broader trend among major financial institutions to shed niche lending units to improve overall liquidity and regulatory capital ratios.
